Dunoon Boxing Tournament is a knockout

Approximately 200 amateur boxers went toe-to-toe in the ring at the Dunoon Boxing Tournament this past weekend, showing off their skills to move up the ranks, with spectators cheering them on. 

This year's event was held at Dunoon Primary School, due to its central location, and so that more spectators could be accommodated to cheer on their favourite boxers.

The tournament featured male and female boxers from 15 different clubs throughout the Cape Metropole, ranging in age from 15 to 35, and competing in their respective weight classes.

It was also an excellent chance for the boxers to network with their peers, and build relationships with coaches and referees.

'Boxing is so much more than going a few rounds in the ring. Not only does it require discipline and commitment, but it also helps build resilience, self-confidence, and leadership skills, which can be applied to everyday situations. And this is true of any sporting code. Competing, and winning, is only a part of it – the life lessons and tools that are crafted through participation in sports, are priceless, and that is why it is so critical that we provide opportunities for young and old alike,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.

A special appearance by lightweight boxing champion Sinethemba Blom, a Dunoon resident and member of the Inkwenkwezi Boxing Club executive committee, was also a highlight of the tournament; he serves as a boxing role model and trains young people.

Local musicians Muted Xi and Lbk Official added to the tournament's vibe, with a lively performance.

The tournament was hosted with the support of ward allocation funding.

'I greatly enjoyed watching the youth enjoy themselves at the local boxing tournament. Our hope is that the programme and tournament will inspire more young people to participate and produce professional boxers. All sporting events are investments in the community, which should continue to receive as much support as possible,' said Ward Councillor, Meisie Makuwa.

The Dunoon Boxing programme and the tournament offers amateur boxers the opportunity to advance to professional status, opening up more opportunities for them.

Boxing is part of the on-going Recreation and Parks youth development programmes held at the Dunoon Recreation Hub.

The Dunoon boxing programme is run in collaboration with the Inkwenkwezi Boxing Club, an experienced boxing club with coaches who share a passion for getting people involved in boxing. Anyone interested can join by visiting the Dunoon Recreation Hub (Community Hall) on Mondays and Wednesdays at 19:00.
